As a member of both Broward County and Florida State Music Teachers Association (BCMTA and FSMTA), I am able to offer an evaluation program which is non-competitive, The Student Day Program. This program is structured and comprehensive and gives the student a great sense of accomplishment. Students are tested annually on their understanding of music theory and general knowledge of music, as well as on their ability to perform. Levels of difficulty range from Primary through Level 12. Certificates of Achievement are awarded at each level recognized by Florida State Music Teachers Association.
I encourage all students to participate in this program.
It is a three part program that takes place at North Broward Prep in Coconut Creek:
1.) The Performance Evaluation takes place in front of one adjudicator who gives constructive criticism on the following: 2 to 3 pieces performed by memory, technique, keyboard theory, sight reading, harmonization, transposition and musicianship. This is scheduled at a specified time in March or April.
2.) Written Theory Exam: Students take their written exams in an assigned area and work at their own pace. They may leave as soon as they have completed the test. Grading is as follows: Progress 0 -69%; Achievement 70% -89%; Honors 90%-100%. The exam is scheduled in November or December.
3.) Aural Theory Exam: Students are tested in groups per level, 1 through 12. Grading is as follows: Progress 0 -69%; Achievement 70% -89%; Honors 90%-100%. The exam is scheduled the same day as the Written Exam in November or December.
Students who receive Honors in their Performance Evaluation and receive Acheivement or above in both theory examinations are eligible to perform in the Student Day Honors Recital scheduled on a Saturday or Sunday in March or April.
The registration fee for all levels is $45.00 which is due with October tuition. Fees are non-refundable.
Levels 1 through 12 require additional materials; these include a Theory Workbook, an Aural Theory CD or USB and Keyboard Skills for a cost of $40.00. These materials must be purchased in August and is due with August tuition.
Student Day music for the Performance evaluation will be assigned no later than the end of October.
